Why a backpack or bag?
As you all know….being prepared before heading out for a day of sightseeing, visiting amusement parks, baseball game, or any other day out on the town is so important.
I have always found that having a well planned and packed backpack (or other type of bag) is essential to having a great day!
Our go to bag is typically a backpack, however, there are so many different types of bags that can meet different needs. Some other favorites include:
We have also found that some locations either don’t allow bags, backpacks, or have certain restrictions based on size or type, or both.
We go to a lot of baseball stadiums and recently, they have implemented new bags rules as some of the stadiums. The classic backpack is not allowed at some stadiums and only drawstring bags or clear bags are allowed.
Be sure to check with your planned locations to ensure that bags of any type and size are allowed.
Once you have found the perfect bag for your travel plans or outing, having the right items in the bag is essential.
Below are items that always find a place in our backpacks:
Hand sanitizer
Germs…germs…germs…need I say more!
Wipes
These help with the germs (do you see a theme here?), but are also great for wiping away dirt and grime, touching door handles, cleaning phones and other items that have fallen on the floor.
Refillable water bottle
Having a refillable water bottle will help everyone in staying hydrated which is so important!
Most places have water fountains available and/or will fill your bottle for you.
Not to mention…you’ll save tons of money not having to purchase expensive bottled water (we all know most tourist locations charge a fortune for bottled water…I’ve seen them at many different locations for $6 a bottle).
Poncho and/or umbrella
Whether you bring and poncho or umbrella (or in some cases, both) will be dependent on where you are planning to go for the day and how the weather is.
If you suspect that it will rain, be sure to be prepared. Don’t put a damper on your plans by letting the rain stop you!
Camera
Yes, most of us have cell phones that can take great photos, but having a camera is something that we still bring most places. There are more options and the photos just turn out better (especially in different lighting conditions).
Hat
My husband and son almost always wear a hat, and I find myself bringing a hat a lot of the time as well, especially to amusement parks and baseball games.
Sun glasses
Sun glasses are non-negotiable in my eyes (haha…pun intended).
My eyes are very sensitive and I can’t bear to be outside without sunglasses.
Ray bans are affordable and stylish and my go to sunglasses…you just can’t go wrong!
Portable Electronics Charger
Portable electronics chargers are a lifesaver and can be used to charge all USB connected devices.
We have charged cell phones, cameras, and kid entertainment gadgets.
Tip…don’t forget to charge the charger in advance, and don’t forget the charging cord.
Guide/Map
If you are sightseeing, having a printed map and/or guide is essential.
I have an obsession with gathering books and maps on the locations we are traveling to.
I always pack one or two for our sightseeing adventures. Last time we were in New York, we had cell connectivity issues, and the map was a lifesaver.
Pen/Pencil/Dry Erase Marker
I always carry at least a pen, but often have a pencil as well.
Also, if I have a map, it is typically a laminated map and a dry erase marker is great for planning out the best route (and if you find a new one, erase and keep moving on).
Snacks
Part of sightseeing and visiting new locations is enjoying the great food.
However, anyone with kids knows that having a few snacks handy is a sanity saver! Having a few simple snacks will help keep kids (and adults) from getting hangry until meal time.
Mints/Gum
Having mints/gum in my bag is something I have always done.
Typically, the kids eat all of them, but at least I feel prepared if my mouth is dry and/or not feeling so fresh (nobody likes or wants bad breath…especially in a crowded area).
